Biography
(He/Him/His)
My career started with studying the social sciences and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from The King’s University and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary. For the past 25 years I have been working as a social worker in various front-line and clinical supervisory roles. I have always had an interest in healing and growth which led me to add a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University.I am registered as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (C.C.C. #10008614) through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. I am also an approved service provider for the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP).
I believe that who we are and how we function in the world is heavily influenced by our early life experiences and the family and social environments we develop within. I also believe human beings are resilient and can recover and grow despite difficult experiences. I naturally associate with Attachment, Systems, and Narrative schools of thought in my approach to counselling. I am also practical enough to use other approaches including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Brief Solution-Focussed Therapy.
Perhaps the most important thing I am able to offer as a counsellor is the ability to sit with people in their pain or struggle and not be overwhelmed by it. I use a non-judgemental and relational approach to create safety and allow for exploration and growth.
Areas that that are of particular interest to me include anxiety, depression, family of origin issues, anger (and other emotions), relationship discord or violence, and addiction. However, I am predominantly a general practitioner and as such am most interested in working with people through whatever issues they feel are most important.
On a personal note, my spouse and I consider ourselves blessed to be living the adventure of parenting two teens and two young adults. I also love to spend time reading a good book or going outside to enjoy this beautiful area we live in.
I am currently at Yale Therapy Group part-time on Monday afternoon and evening. Session fees are $130. If you would like to speak further with me I can be reached via cell phone at 778-201-7379 or email at ianvandeventercounselling@gmail.com.
